Ceremonial Cacao vs Coffee: Why I Switched and Never Looked Back

Samantha Burgos

I Was a 3-Cup-a-Day Coffee Drinker

I'm not anti-coffee. I loved coffee. The taste, the ritual, the energy. But I didn't love the anxiety, the 2pm crash, the disrupted sleep, or the dependency. When I discovered ceremonial cacao, I wasn't looking for a replacement — but that's exactly what it became.

What Is Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is not hot chocolate. It's 100% pure, minimally processed cacao made from whole cacao beans — typically sourced from small farms in Central America. The Bare Haus sources directly from Oaxaca, Mexico, where cacao has been used in ceremony for thousands of years.

The difference between ceremonial cacao and regular cocoa is significant. Regular cocoa powder is heavily processed, alkalized, and stripped of most beneficial compounds. Ceremonial cacao retains all of its natural fats, minerals, and active compounds — including the one that makes it special: theobromine.

Theobromine vs Caffeine

This is where it gets interesting. Coffee's active compound is caffeine — a central nervous system stimulant that works by blocking adenosine receptors in your brain, making you feel alert but also triggering cortisol production (your stress hormone). Cacao's active compound is theobromine — a cardiovascular stimulant that increases blood flow, dilates blood vessels, and provides sustained energy without the cortisol spike.

The result: cacao gives you 4-6 hours of gentle, sustained energy with no crash, no jitters, and no anxiety. It also naturally elevates mood by stimulating the release of serotonin, dopamine, and anandamide (the bliss molecule).

The Nutritional Comparison

A cup of ceremonial cacao contains more magnesium per gram than almost any other food (most women are magnesium deficient), iron, zinc, and potassium, more antioxidants than blueberries, green tea, or red wine, theobromine for sustained energy, and anandamide and PEA for natural mood elevation.

A cup of coffee contains caffeine (stimulant), some antioxidants, and that's about it.

How to Make Ceremonial Cacao

Heat 8oz of water or plant milk to just below boiling. Add 1-2 tablespoons of Bare Haus ceremonial cacao. Add a pinch of cinnamon, cayenne, or vanilla (optional). Whisk until frothy — a milk frother works perfectly. Set an intention. Drink slowly and mindfully.

The whole process takes 5 minutes and becomes the most grounding part of your morning.

My Experience After 6 Months

I sleep better. My anxiety is lower. I don't crash at 2pm. I don't need a second cup of anything. My morning feels intentional instead of reactive. And honestly, the taste — rich, earthy, slightly bitter with warm spice — is something I genuinely look forward to more than I ever looked forward to coffee.

I'm not saying you have to quit coffee. But if you're curious about what mornings feel like without the cortisol roller coaster, try cacao for a week. That's all it took for me.
